Frankfurt-Hahn Airport, identified by the IATA code HHN, is an international airport located near Hahn in the Hunsrück region of Rhineland-Palatinate, western Germany. Despite its name, the airport is not located in the city of Frankfurt am Main. It lies approximately 120 kilometers from Frankfurt and serves as an alternative gateway to western Germany and several destinations across Europe.
The history of Hahn Airport is closely connected to military aviation. Originally established as a United States Air Force base during the Cold War, the site was later converted for civilian use and began commercial operations in 1993. A major turning point came in 1999, when Ryanair started operating flights from Hahn, helping establish the airport as an important base for low-cost air travel in Germany. Since then, the airport has continued to develop its passenger and cargo operations.
Hahn Airport has a particularly important role in both passenger aviation and air freight. Its location in the heart of Europe makes it a strategic logistics hub, while its 24-hour operating permit allows cargo flights to operate around the clock. The airport has a 3,800-meter runway capable of handling large aircraft and has developed specialized infrastructure for freight operations.
Passenger traffic has also grown significantly in recent years. In 2025, around 2.2 million passengers used Frankfurt-Hahn Airport, an increase of approximately 18% compared with 2024. The airport continues to expand its network, with the 2026 summer schedule introducing new connections including Tuzla in Bosnia and Herzegovina and additional services to Bucharest. Popular destinations such as London Stansted and Palma de Mallorca remain among the most frequently served routes.
The airport is particularly well known for its extensive network of European and Mediterranean destinations. Current services include cities and holiday destinations such as London, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Alicante, Bari, Palermo, Thessaloniki and several destinations in Italy, Spain, Greece, Eastern Europe and North Africa. The exact route network varies according to the seasonal flight schedule.
For travelers, Frankfurt-Hahn can be an interesting option when looking for low-cost flights to and from Germany. However, its distance from Frankfurt should always be taken into account when planning a journey. Despite being marketed under the Frankfurt name, reaching the city of Frankfurt requires additional ground transportation and considerably more travel time than from Frankfurt Airport (FRA).
Today, Frankfurt-Hahn Airport combines its origins as a former American military airfield with a modern role as an international passenger and cargo airport. Its combination of low-cost connections, international routes, 24-hour operations and a strategic location makes it an important aviation and logistics hub in western Germany.
