From Jumpman to Mario: the birth of an icon

At the very beginning, the character we now know as Mario wasn’t called Mario at all. In the 1981 game Donkey Kong, Nintendo named him Jumpman, a functional but not particularly memorable name.

Around that same time, Nintendo of America was operating out of a warehouse in Seattle. The building’s owner was an Italian-American businessman named Mario Segale. When Nintendo fell behind on rent payments, Segale showed up in person to address the issue. His presence — firm, authoritative, mustached — made a strong impression on the development team.

And that’s when inspiration struck.

Mario Segale: the man behind the name

During an internal meeting, the developers jokingly decided to rename Jumpman after their landlord: Mario. What started as a casual, almost playful decision turned out to be a brilliant one.

The name gave the character a human identity. “Mario” sounded familiar, friendly, and easy to remember. When Super Mario Bros was released in 1985 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, the character quickly became a global phenomenon.

A success born by chance

Mario Segale never asked for royalties or recognition. For many years, he remained largely unaware of just how famous his name had become. Only later did Nintendo officially confirm the origin of Mario’s name, turning a behind-the-scenes anecdote into one of the most fascinating stories in video game history.

Today, Super Mario is one of the most recognizable characters in the world — a symbol of the entire gaming industry. And it all began with a chance encounter and an overdue rent payment.

A curiosity that makes Mario even more human

Knowing that Super Mario’s name comes from a real person makes the character feel even more special. He’s not just a digital hero, but the product of a true story shaped by coincidence, intuition and a touch of irony.

Did you know that sometimes legends are born exactly this way?
