Arasta Mosque is one of the historic landmarks of Skopje's Old Bazaar. Dating back to the 15th century, it is closely connected with the early development of the Ottoman bazaar and the legacy of Paşa Yiğit Bey.
Located in the heart of Skopje's Old Bazaar, between the Bezisten and Kurshumli An, the Arasta Mosque is one of the religious buildings associated with the early development of the city's Ottoman bazaar.
The mosque is generally dated to the 15th century and is traditionally associated with Paşa Yiğit Bey, the first Ottoman governor of Skopje. However, the surviving historical sources do not provide complete certainty about every detail of its foundation. The original waqf document and the inscription that once stood above the entrance have not survived.
The name Arasta is particularly significant in understanding the history of the site. In the Ottoman world, the term referred to a commercial street or row of shops, often connected to a religious institution through the waqf system. The presence of the mosque within a commercial area therefore reflects the close relationship between religious life and economic activity that characterised Skopje's Old Bazaar.
The Arasta Mosque was among the early important buildings around which the bazaar developed. Its location, close to the first major mosque established by Paşa Yiğit Bey, contributed to the formation of one of the earliest centres of Ottoman Skopje. Over the centuries, the mosque underwent several changes. It was destroyed in the 17th century and subsequently rebuilt during the 18th and 19th centuries.
The 1963 Skopje earthquake, which devastated large parts of the city, also damaged the mosque. For many years, mainly the walls of the building remained, while the site underwent further conservation efforts. A major restoration phase took place between 2010 and 2014, resulting in much of the appearance visible today.
The history of Arasta Mosque is closely intertwined with that of the Old Bazaar of Skopje, one of the city's most important historic areas and a place where numerous Ottoman monuments have survived. The mosque illustrates how religious buildings, markets, caravanserais and other public structures contributed to the growth of Skopje from the 15th century onwards.
Today, Arasta Mosque in Skopje is an interesting stop for anyone exploring the history of the Old Bazaar and the Ottoman heritage of North Macedonia's capital. Its location between the Bezisten and Kurshumli An also makes it easy to include in a walking itinerary through the historic heart of Skopje.
