The Museum of Contemporary Art in Skopje is one of the symbols of the city's rebirth after the 1963 earthquake. Founded through international solidarity, it houses an important collection of modern and contemporary art.
Perched on the Kale hill, overlooking the centre of Skopje, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Skopje (MoCA Skopje) is one of the most important cultural institutions in the capital of North Macedonia.
The history of the museum is closely connected to the 1963 Skopje earthquake. After the disaster devastated much of the city, artists and cultural institutions from around the world responded with an extraordinary gesture of solidarity, donating works of art to help support Skopje's cultural recovery. More than a hundred works arrived in the city within just a few months, contributing to the creation of a new museum.
The Museum of Contemporary Art was officially founded on 11 February 1964. Its collection continued to grow through donations from artists and institutions across many countries, transforming Skopje into an international meeting point for modern and contemporary art.
Among the artists represented in the collection are internationally renowned names such as Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Wassily Kandinsky, Pierre Soulages, Victor Vasarely, Alberto Burri and Robert Indiana, alongside numerous Macedonian, Yugoslav and European artists. The collection now includes thousands of works from countries around the world.
Another defining feature of the museum is its building itself. Construction was funded by the Polish government as a contribution to the reconstruction of Skopje, while the design was entrusted to Polish architects Józef Mokrzynski, Eugeniusz Wierzbicki and Wacław Kłyszewski. Opened in 1970, the building is regarded as an important example of late modernist architecture and one of the architectural symbols of Skopje's post-earthquake reconstruction.
The complex covers approximately 5,000 square metres and includes exhibition spaces for permanent and temporary displays, a cinema hall, library, archives, conservation facilities and other spaces. The large outdoor area also provides room for sculptures and installations.
Today, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Skopje hosts temporary exhibitions, educational programmes and events dedicated to modern and contemporary art. Its role extends beyond preserving artworks, promoting dialogue between art, culture and society.
Visiting the museum means discovering not only one of the most important art institutions in North Macedonia, but also an important chapter in the history of Skopje after the 1963 earthquake. Its location on Kale Hill, distinctive modernist architecture and remarkable international collection make it an interesting stop for anyone looking to explore the cultural and contemporary side of the capital.
