Mustafa Pasha Mosque is one of Skopje's most important Ottoman monuments. Built in 1492, it overlooks the Old Bazaar from its elevated position and preserves elegant features of Ottoman architecture.
Perched on a hill above Skopje's Old Bazaar, the Mustafa Pasha Mosque is one of the most important symbols of the city's Ottoman heritage. Built in 1492 at the request of Mustafa Pasha, an important official and vizier of the Ottoman Empire, the mosque still preserves many of the architectural features that make it one of the most significant historic Islamic buildings in Skopje.
Its elevated position, close to the Skopje Fortress (Kale), gives the Mustafa Pasha Mosque a prominent place overlooking the Old Bazaar. The building has a square plan covered by a large central dome, measuring around 16.3 metres in diameter, together with an elegant minaret. The entrance porch, supported by marble columns and topped by three small domes, leads into the main prayer hall.
The interior is decorated with floral motifs, arabesques and calligraphic inscriptions, reflecting the refined artistic traditions of Ottoman architecture. The complex also includes the türbe, or mausoleum, of Mustafa Pasha, built in 1519, as well as the richly decorated sarcophagus of his daughter Umi, featuring floral motifs and Persian inscriptions.
The original complex was considerably larger and included a madrasa, an imaret and other buildings, many of which have not survived. Despite the changes over the centuries, the mosque remains an important example of Ottoman religious architecture in North Macedonia.
The history of Mustafa Pasha Mosque also extends into the modern era. The building suffered damage during the devastating 1963 Skopje earthquake and subsequently underwent conservation and restoration work. A major restoration project was completed in 2011, helping to preserve the mosque and its architectural heritage for future generations.
Today, visiting Mustafa Pasha Mosque in Skopje offers an opportunity to discover an important part of the city's Ottoman past. Its historic architecture, elevated position and proximity to the Old Bazaar and Skopje Fortress make it an interesting stop for anyone exploring Skopje's history, culture and religious heritage.
