Saint Naum Monastery

Saint Naum Monastery is one of the most fascinating and important places to visit on the shores of Lake Ohrid, in southwestern North Macedonia. Founded in the 10th century by Saint Naum of Ohrid, a disciple of Saints Cyril and Methodius, the monastery is surrounded by an extraordinary natural landscape, between the crystal-clear waters of the lake and the mountains of Galičica National Park.

The heart of the complex is the Church of the Holy Archangels, built around the tomb of Saint Naum. Enlarged and rebuilt over the centuries, the church preserves remarkable frescoes and remains one of the most important places of worship in the Macedonian Orthodox tradition.

According to tradition, Saint Naum died in 910 and was buried inside the monastery. Even today, many visitors approach his tomb to experience a famous local legend: by placing an ear against the stone, it is said that you can hear the saint's heartbeat.

The monastery is not only a place of history and spirituality. Its location on the shores of Lake Ohrid offers spectacular views and provides access to the nearby Saint Naum Springs, where crystal-clear waters emerge among lush vegetation, forming small streams and waterways. The area can also be explored by traditional small boats.
