Frankfurt Am Main

Frankfurt am Main is one of Germany’s most important cities and one of Europe’s leading financial and economic centers. Located on the banks of the River Main in the state of Hesse, Frankfurt is known for its remarkable contrast between history and modernity. Medieval streets, historic squares and important monuments stand alongside one of Germany’s most distinctive skylines, dominated by modern skyscrapers.

The history of Frankfurt dates back to the early Middle Ages. The city was first mentioned in written sources in 794 under the name Franconofurd. Thanks to its strategic position along important European trade routes, Frankfurt gradually developed into a major center of commerce, trade and political activity. For centuries, it was a Free Imperial City and played an important role in the history of the Holy Roman Empire.

The historic heart of the city is Römerberg, the central square of the old town, dominated by the Römer, Frankfurt’s historic city hall. Nearby stands the Kaiserdom St. Bartholomäus, the Imperial Cathedral of Saint Bartholomew, while the surrounding Neue Altstadt combines reconstructed historic buildings with contemporary architecture. Completed in 2018, the new old town includes 35 buildings and recreates part of the historic urban landscape that was destroyed during the Second World War.

The Imperial Cathedral is closely connected to the political history of Germany and the Holy Roman Empire. From 1356 onwards, Frankfurt hosted the elections of German kings, while between 1562 and 1792 ten rulers were crowned Holy Roman Emperors in the cathedral. Its 95-meter-high tower remains one of the most recognizable landmarks of the historic center.

Frankfurt also has a strong cultural identity. The city was the birthplace of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, one of the most influential writers in European literature, and visitors can explore his birthplace, the Goethe House. Along the banks of the Main, the Museumsufer, or Museum Embankment, brings together numerous cultural institutions, including the renowned Städel Museum.

The modern face of Frankfurt is equally impressive. Its financial district is characterized by numerous skyscrapers that create a distinctive skyline, unusual among European cities. Frankfurt is an important international financial center and is home to major institutions, including the European Central Bank. One of the best places to enjoy panoramic views of the city is the Main Tower, whose observation deck offers views across the historic center, the River Main and the surrounding metropolitan area.

Beyond its business district, Frankfurt offers green spaces, lively neighborhoods, markets, restaurants and traditional establishments. One of the city's most characteristic experiences is visiting a traditional Apfelwein tavern and tasting the region's famous apple wine, a drink deeply connected to Frankfurt's local culture and gastronomy.

Frankfurt am Main is therefore much more than Germany's financial capital. It is a city where more than 1,200 years of European history meet contemporary architecture, international business and a vibrant cultural scene. Its historic center, Römerberg, Imperial Cathedral, museums along the Main and striking skyline make Frankfurt an interesting destination for both a short city break and a longer journey through Hesse.
