Description
Chieti is one of the oldest and most important historic centres in Abruzzo, the capital of the province of the same name and a city with more than two thousand years of history. Built on a hill overlooking the Pescara River valley, Chieti offers spectacular views stretching from the Maiella mountains to the Adriatic Sea. Its origins date back to ancient times, when it was known as Teate Marrucinorum and was the main city of the Marrucini people. It later became an important Roman municipium, leaving behind a rich archaeological heritage that can still be seen today through monuments, artefacts, and historic remains throughout the city.
Walking through Chieti's historic centre, visitors can discover elegant aristocratic palaces, ancient churches, monumental squares, and picturesque corners that tell the story of the city's development over the centuries. Corso Marrucino is at the heart of city life, lined with shops, historic cafés, and buildings of significant architectural value. Among Chieti's main landmarks are the Cathedral of San Giustino, dedicated to the city's patron saint, the Marrucino Theatre, one of the most prestigious historic theatres in Abruzzo, and the Roman Temples complex, which reflects the importance of the city during the Roman imperial period. The National Archaeological Museum of Abruzzo and the National Archaeological Museum "La Civitella" are also particularly important, preserving valuable archaeological finds from across the region, including the famous Warrior of Capestrano statue.
Chieti is a city that combines the charm of its past with a lively contemporary atmosphere. Alongside the historic centre, the modern area known as Chieti Scalo has developed as an important economic and educational hub, home to the University of Studies "Gabriele d'Annunzio" as well as healthcare and research facilities that attract students and professionals from across Italy. This dual identity makes Chieti an important cultural, administrative, and educational centre for the region, contributing to a dynamic environment with numerous opportunities.
Throughout the year, Chieti hosts numerous cultural events, concerts, theatre programmes, religious celebrations, and initiatives dedicated to local traditions. The Holy Week celebrations, particularly the historic Good Friday Procession accompanied by the music of Saverio Selecchy, are among the most deeply felt and evocative traditions in Abruzzo, attracting thousands of visitors every year. Local gastronomy also plays an important role, offering the authentic flavours of Abruzzo through restaurants, traditional trattorias, and local products, accompanied by the renowned wines produced in the hills around Chieti.
Chieti's geographical location also makes it an ideal starting point for exploring the surrounding area. Within a relatively short distance, visitors can reach the beaches of the Trabocchi Coast, the Maiella National Park, historic villages in the inland areas, and numerous nature and food-and-wine itineraries. The close proximity of the sea, hills, and mountains allows travellers to enjoy very different experiences during the same trip, making Chieti an appealing destination for both Italian and international visitors.
Today, Chieti is one of the most interesting cultural destinations in central Italy, offering a perfect balance of history, art, archaeology, traditions, and quality of life. Its monumental heritage, vibrant cultural scene, university presence, and strategic location in the heart of Abruzzo make it an ideal destination for travellers looking to discover an authentic city with a strong identity and distinctive character. Visiting Chieti means taking a journey through centuries of history and discovering a place where the past continues to interact with the present, surrounded by extraordinary natural and cultural landscapes.
