Brief History of Torre Cerrano

Torre Cerrano, indicated on ancient maps and documents, is situated in a commanding position by the sea. At the beginning of the century, it underwent significant changes due to the construction of the railway line, which altered its original appearance considerably. It is well-preserved and is connected to Torre Vomano to the north and Torre di Salina Maggiore to the south. The tower is of the classic vice-regal type with three machicolations on each side, well-preserved and with important additions on two sides and the superstructure in a distinctive style. The structure is topped by a second superstructure tower with portholes and false machicolations and battlements, crowning the terrace. It is worth noting the inscription on the entrance gate, even if inaccurate, which reads:

"Torre di Cerrano - built in the 16th century by Pietro da Toledo."

In 1598, an entry by Engineer Carlo Gambacorta describes the tower as follows:

"This X Tower of Cerrano in the territory of Atri is distant from the straight Tower of Salino Maggiore towards Puglia by five miles, and towards Abruzzo from the Tower of Humano by five miles. It is well-located and of good construction, overseeing a cove in front of the said tower and two springs of Pesco, and the other source of Persico... mediocre water. It corresponds with the straight tower of Salino towards Puglia, and towards Abruzzo with the said Tower of Humano, and beyond those towers, it also overlooks the Tower of Tordino and Salinella. There is a small bronze falconet, a piece of iron, and a bell to signal. There are also three muskets of the Corporal. It is necessary to mount the falconet which is without a carriage, and this will cost about a ducat."

The Torre Cerrano dates back to the 16th century and was originally used as a defensive outpost to protect the coast from pirate attacks. This majestic cylindrical tower was built on a rocky promontory and provided a panoramic view of the Adriatic coastline. Over the centuries, the tower has undergone various modifications and restorations, but it still retains its charm and historical authenticity.
