Description
Skopje is the capital and largest city of North Macedonia, a destination that is still relatively unknown to mass tourism but rich in history, culture, and fascinating architectural heritage. Located in the northern part of the country on the banks of the Vardar River, Skopje is an important meeting point between different cultures and traditions and an ideal base for exploring North Macedonia and other destinations across the Balkans. The city combines historic buildings, modern monuments, traditional bazaars, pedestrian areas, museums, and large green spaces, offering visitors an experience that is very different from that of Europe's better-known capitals.
One of the main attractions in Skopje is the Stone Bridge, one of the city's most recognisable landmarks and one of the most characteristic connections between the modern and historic parts of the capital. The bridge crosses the Vardar River and leads towards Macedonia Square, the city's main public space, surrounded by monuments and important buildings. In the upper part of the city stands Kale Fortress, one of Skopje's most important historic landmarks, offering panoramic views over the urban centre. The fortress is a reminder of the city's long and complex history and is one of the most interesting places to include in a Skopje itinerary.
The historic centre has a distinctive atmosphere, particularly around the Old Bazaar, one of the capital's most characteristic neighbourhoods. With its narrow streets, traditional shops, restaurants, cafés, mosques, and historic buildings, the bazaar offers visitors the opportunity to experience the more traditional side of Skopje. Important landmarks in the area include Mustafa Pasha Mosque, Kapan Han, and numerous Ottoman-era buildings. The Old Bazaar is also an excellent place to try some of the specialities of Macedonian and Balkan cuisine, which combines Mediterranean, Ottoman, and Eastern European influences.
Skopje also offers numerous museums and cultural attractions. Among the places worth visiting are the Museum of Macedonia, the Memorial House of Mother Teresa, and the Archaeological Museum of North Macedonia. The Memorial House is dedicated to Mother Teresa, who was born in Skopje in 1910, and is one of the city's most visited cultural attractions. Another distinctive feature of Skopje's urban landscape is the large number of statues and monuments found throughout the city centre, contributing to an unusual and easily recognisable architectural character.
One of the most interesting places to visit near Skopje is Matka Canyon, a spectacular natural area located a short distance from the capital. The canyon offers scenic hiking trails, dramatic rock walls, caves, and an artificial lake surrounded by lush vegetation. It is particularly popular with nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts and can easily be visited as a day trip from Skopje. The area surrounding the capital also features monasteries, villages, and other destinations where visitors can discover the natural and cultural heritage of North Macedonia.
Skopje's location also makes it an interesting starting point for exploring the rest of the country. From the capital, visitors can organise trips to Lake Ohrid, one of North Macedonia's most important natural and tourist attractions, or travel to other cities and destinations across the Balkans thanks to the region's road network and international connections. Skopje International Airport, located approximately 20 kilometres from the city centre, provides connections to numerous European destinations and makes the capital easily accessible from Italy and other parts of Europe.
Skopje is therefore an interesting destination for travellers looking for an alternative, affordable European capital with a rich history. The historic centre, Stone Bridge, Kale Fortress, Old Bazaar, museums, Vardar River, and nearby Matka Canyon offer plenty of possibilities for different types of itineraries. With its combination of culture, history, gastronomy, nature, and generally affordable prices, Skopje is an ideal destination for a weekend city break or a longer journey exploring North Macedonia and the Balkans.

Chiedi “taxi” in albergo o usa un’app (Uber, Grab, Bolt). Concorda il prezzo se non c’è tassametro.
Se non sai, arrotonda. In molti Paesi il servizio è già nel conto.
